A hemorrhoid is a condition where the veins around the anus or lower rectum are swollen and inflamed. They can occur either inside the anus (internal) or under the skin around the anus (external).
Hemorrhoids typically occur as a result of straining to move a stool. Other contributing factors are chronic diarrhea or constipation, pregnancy, aging and anal intercourse.
The most frequent symptom of an internal hemorrhoid is bright red blood on the stool, toilet paper or in the toilet bowl. External hemorrhoids may include painful swelling or a hard lump around the anus. Not everyone that has hemorrhoids experiences symptoms.
Hemorrhoids are usually not dangerous, although there are other anorectal problems that have similar symptoms.
Treatments include warm baths, creams, suppositories, change in diet and in a
few cases, surgery. In most cases the symptoms will go away in a few days.
